Digital Freedom Project in Medan is a student-led initiative focused on expanding access to accurate information about liberty, human rights, and libertarian ideas through digital media. The project centers on improving Indonesian-language content and digital literacy to address widespread misunderstanding and negative perceptions surrounding liberal ideas in Indonesia.
The project responds to a clear information gap in Medan and the broader Indonesian public, where discussions about liberty are often shaped by misinformation, limited access to quality reading materials, and poor representation in widely used platforms. In particular, Indonesian Wikipedia lacks sufficient high-quality articles that clearly explain libertarian concepts, digital rights, and freedom-related themes, contributing to public misperception.
To address this, the project will host a series of online webinars featuring credible speakers on liberty and digital freedom, followed by an in-person conference on freedom in digital media and digital rights. A core component is a hands-on Wikipedia writing workshop that trains students to write, verify sources, and improve article quality in Indonesian Wikipedia. The project is implemented in cooperation with external partners, including Wikimedia Indonesia and Garis Literasi, to strengthen credibility and long-term impact.
The target audience is students from the University of Sumatera Utara in Medan City. By combining education, skills training, and concrete content production, the project aims to leave a lasting digital footprint while equipping students with practical encyclopedia writing and information-verification skills.
Initial Objectives:
- Increase student understanding of liberty, digital rights, and libertarian ideas through educational webinars and a public conference.
- Train students in Wikipedia writing, source verification, and digital information literacy.
- Create and improve Indonesian-language Wikipedia articles on freedom, liberty, and human rights.
- Expand public access to accurate, high-quality digital reading materials on liberty-related topics.
