Students For Liberty Calls for the Release of 46 Activists in Tbilisi, Georgia

Published on

Tbilisi, Georgia — On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, Georgian police arrested 46 individuals at rallies demanding the release of the jailed former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. One of the detainees was a member of Students For Liberty in Georgia, Boris Chele Kurua.

As reported by the chairman of the Georgian libertarian party, Zurab Girchi Japaridze, Kurua was present at the demonstration, did not break any state laws, and was arrested for obscure reasons. Further details are unknown at this time.

Yesterday’s arrests are yet another example of the government’s attempts to silence and control Georgian citizens. The government’s actions threaten people’s rights to freedom of expression  and individual liberty. The protesters arrested are being denied the ability to exercise their rights and access opportunities that should be available to all Georgian citizens.

We express solidarity with the detainees and their families and stand with the Georgian people in their aspirations for a freer future. We support their call for the state to respect their rights to express themselves and hold peaceful demonstrations. At Students For Liberty, we believe that freedom of expression is a fundamental pillar of a free and democratic society and must be upheld and protected.

Students For Liberty calls for the international community to demand the immediate release of Boris Chele Kurua, the 45 other detainees, and all political prisoners in Georgia.
