Day in the Life: European National Coordinator Mário Havel

  1. What made you decide to join Students For Liberty?

I was so thrilled to find a group of people who shared my ideas. After I experienced the atmosphere at the first LibertyCon I attended, I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of. Leadership and liberty were my passion even before joining Students For Liberty, and I can’t imagine any other organization providing me with a unique experience like SFL has done.

  1. What was your biggest accomplishment as a student leader with Students For Liberty?

It is hard to pick just one because each accomplishment is different. As a team, we organized many successful events which had an impact, including events with over 200 attendees. I brought a lot of new people to our movement, and helped them grow, which has also allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Helping to recruit and train new leaders is probably the most important accomplishment for me at SFL.

  1. What are some of the best tools and resources Students For Liberty gave you?

The Local Coordinator Program, followed by other ESFL training courses opened many gates for me and introduced me to new ideas. I am so thankful for the opportunity to meet influential figures across the libertarian space. But the greatest resource I got from Students For Liberty is a network of amazing, like-minded people from all around the world.

  1. What would you tell someone who’s considering getting involved?

I would tell them that they are standing in front of one of the best decisions of their life! Students For Liberty will open gates to a new and freer world. Anybody who understands why liberty is so important shouldn’t hesitate to join.

  1. What made you interested in the ideas of liberty?

I realized there are people who want to take my freedom and their arguments for it don’t make any sense. That’s why I started to learn about liberty, and found out that liberty works and can improve my life and everybody else’s life.

Growing up in a post-communist country allowed me to see it everywhere around me, but I didn’t quite understand the importance of freedom at the time. After joining SFL, I quickly perceived that the most effective way to help the world around me is to spread freedom in my community.

  1. What does liberty mean TO YOU?

In the simplest terms, liberty means being free to come and go as I please, and to have the opportunity to prosper and live in a better world. More freedom equals a better life, better economy, better society, and better environment…it works. Living free, spreading liberty, and building free societies is the best thing you can do for yourself and the world around you.
