Donor Spotlight: Rick Rule

Published on

Rick Rule is a director of the major global investment firm Sprott Investments, but he didn’t start out with that goal.

He simply liked being outside, and started investing in natural resources like precious metals, agriculture, and water utilities. He calls this his first big mistake in businesses – loving the outdoors so much that he created a career that would keep him behind a desk.

It’s that sense of humor and willingness to look at a situation clearly that makes Rick Rule such a great businessman and philanthropist.

Rick often tells the story of how he fired himself from the position of CEO because he simply wasn’t right for the job. Someone with that kind of insight and integrity certainly would not hesitate to share his thoughts and expertise on how we can best serve the students we work for together. That’s what it comes down to — helping the students. He has said that you can’t live your life looking to make money, or it won’t happen. Instead, he said, “by delivering value, then money happens.”

In fact, that is one of his key tenets for success: delivering utility. Another one of his guidelines for life is to live within your means. It sounds simple, but so many people don’t and it leads to disaster.

Finally, Rule says each of us needs to be responsible for ourselves. He says, “Don’t believe you have a call on the collective, and don’t make the collective part of your plan. People will take money by the ballot box or by the gun.”

By managing his firm worth $12.1 billion in investments (as of May 2020), he is helping people set themselves up for success.

By supporting Students For Liberty, he is helping to educate, develop, and empower the next generation of leaders of liberty so that perhaps, even more people can take advantage of that opportunity – and the ballot box won’t be quite so powerful.

He said that SFL is “one of the few organizations in the world that gives me unalloyed hope about the future.”

He recently joined our CEO, Dr. Wolf von Laer, for a webinar in which he discussed Leadership, Libertarianism, and Investing. If you missed it, you can watch it by clicking below!

Because of Rick Rule and people like him who invest their time and resources, our students are able to organize events, enlighten others, and go on to do unbelievable things after graduation.

Would you also like to invest in the future of liberty?
