The team at Students For Liberty are delighted to invite you to the latest event of our Liberty at Home series, on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at 11AM EST. Highlighting the issues surrounding corporate welfare, this webinar will consist of a discussion around interventionist government policies that serve to benefit select individuals, companies, or industries.

Titled ‘Welfare For the Rich’, this event will feature Phil Harvey, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Lisa Conyers, a nonpartisan consultant. They will be interviewed by Students For Liberty’s CEO, Dr. Wolf von Laer.

Phil Harvey is a successful entrepreneur who has founded several impactful nonprofit organizations. Educated at Harvard, where he earned a degree in Slavic languages and literature in 1961, he also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina.

In 1970, he co-founded Adam & Eve, a mail order retailer specializing in sex toys and adult entertainment. Following his involvement with CARE, an international charity, he decided to take action to address issues such as global hunger and lack of family planning in the developing world.

With the profits from Adam & Eve, Harvey founded DKT International, a charity aimed at promoting family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention across more than twenty countries. He is also a co-founder of Population Services International, a health charity that is currently active in almost 70 countries. Due to his extensive promotion of social interests through his business endeavors, he has been referred to as a “hardcore philanthropist” by Mother Jones magazine.

Known for his libertarian values, Phil Harvey has engaged in a number of successful legal battles with the United States and New York State governments in defense of First Amendment rights. The author of five books, it was Harvey’s legal battles over the course of several decades that inspired him to write The Government vs. Erotica: The Siege of Adam & Eve. Published in 2001, this book was nominated by the American Library Association’s Freedom Roundtable as the year’s leading work on intellectual freedom.

Harvey’s strong support for individual freedom, free speech, and civil liberties led him to set up the DKT Liberty Project in 2010. He also serves on the board of the National Coalition Against Censorship.

In 2016, Phil Harvey and Lisa Conyers co-authored The Human Cost of Welfare: How the System Hurts the People It’s Supposed to Help. This publication received praise from Reason Magazine, where it was labelled “a must-read for anyone interested in making government accountable.”

Lisa Conyers, who has served as director of policy studies for the DKT Liberty Project, is a nonpartisan consultant to private clients and think tanks. Her work focuses on economics and public policy issues. She holds an undergraduate degree in American Studies from George Mason University, and a master’s degree in Management from the University of Maryland.

A highly sought-after ghostwriter, Lisa Conyers has been published in outlets including the New York Daily News, the Los Angeles Times, and the Huffington Post, among others. A frequent guest on radio and TV, where she has discussed various economic and social issues, Lisa Conyers is particularly interested in making complex economic issues accessible to a wider audience. She has also worked as a consultant on films and documentaries relating to economics and free markets.
