Former student leader, Dr. Liya Palagashvili, who once served as a member of Students For Liberty’s executive board, is now an Assistant Professor of Economics at SUNY-Purchase College and a research fellow with NYU Law.
When reflecting on her involvement in Students For Liberty, Liya said she is grateful for her time with the organization, saying that:
“[SFL] became my community and my life-long friends, and I’ve learned so much about communicating the ideas of liberty through SFL.”
She first became involved in Students For Liberty in 2009, after attending one of our Regional Conferences. Her proudest accomplishment during her time with SFL was organizing a webinar series, wherein one webinar was held each month. She describes:
“I was in charge of choosing speakers and topics, inviting them, organizing everything, marketing, and so on. I remember it took a lot of time and hard work, but they were quite successful.”
In 2016, Liya was selected as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for Law & Policy. She was chosen in recognition of her research into how regulatory frameworks affect the working environment for tech startups.
This is being done through interviews and surveys that go out to founders and CEOs in order to conduct an analysis. Forbes also cited her ongoing work on a book examining regulatory responses to the 2008 financial crisis.
She is also conducting research into criminal justice reform, focusing on the development of policing in the second half of the 20th century.
Today, her research areas include law and economics, political economy, development economics, and entrepreneurship.
Now, Liya Palagashvili is teaching the lessons of economics to a new generation of students and conducting research into new areas. Students For Liberty is proud to have alumni as driven and talented as Liya!
