Dennis Jose Mattam

Bio:Dennis Jose is a seasoned Legal & Project Management consultant based in India, specialising in providing strategic counsel and insightful solutions to optimise business/non-profit operations and navigate complex legal landscapes. He holds a licence to practice in Indian Courts of Law. His opinion that law could be used as a catalyst to facilitate a libertarian reform is rooted in the ideals of Natural Justice, the Rule of Law, and Constitutionalism. The self-made libertarian in him started to unfold at the age of 14, when he realized that Indian high schools’ social-science textbooks were imperatively dogmatic, with statist biases, for young minds like his, instead of opening up space for intellectually political dialogue.

While holding onto the idea of pragmatism wherever possible to suit the realities of the region, he believes firmly in putting perseverant efforts toward transforming the system. However, he’s both open for discussion at any time and eagerly learns from anyone who approaches him. He proudly describes his family members’ indefatigable hard work to excel in life and society as his stepping stones to the idea of free-market capitalism.

Dennis’ journey with SFL began in 2018 when he attended an SFL Colloquium, and quickly became a Local Coordinator, igniting student activism in his home state. By 2020, he had advanced to Regional Coordinator for South India. He then expanded SFL to the Maldives, where he organized the first in-person SFL event, the SFL Maldives Leadership Forum. In 2021, his university’s SFL club won the South Asia Regional Event of the Year award.

Apart from spreading the gospel of liberty, Dennis loves travelling, especially by the railroads, visiting historically and politically significant places, only to get obsessed with déjà vu. Once a professional chess player, he wouldn’t hesitate to initiate a queen’s gambit, strategize on your king’s side and, with a foray of forks, skewers, discovers and deflections, sway you into a checkmate.

Favorite figures in Liberty: Adam Smith, Ayn Rand, Rose & Milton Friedman, Steven Horwitz and John Dalberg-Acton.

On liberty and SFL: “Students For Liberty, to me, is synonymous to a freer civilized society under the big tent idea of libertarianism. Finding SFL, to associate with, was a breakthrough in my life as it offered me the feeling of togetherness in the noble cause of advancing liberty in all aspects of life.”

Students For Liberty is the largest pro-liberty student organization in the world.
