Former student leader now president of the Advocates for Self-Government

Mike Sertic, a former student leader and executive board member, is now the president of the Advocates for Self-Government.

Mike told me he’s always been interested in the ideas of liberty and even from a young age, pro-liberty themes in art and film combined with his inquisitive nature and he says there were many “small seeds of liberty” planted in his mind from an early age.

When he went to school at California State University, Sacramento he wanted to have a group where he could meet and discuss with other liberty-minded people. He reached out to Dr. Jim Lark, who was then the chairman for the Advocates for Self-Government and Lark suggested Students For Liberty. As Mike says, “it was great advice!”

“When I first realized I was libertarian, I was politically lonely. SFL helped introduce me to a network of hundreds of like-minded students across the country to discuss important issues and explore new ways to spread libertarian messages and ideas to others. I’m as passionate now as I was then about the empowering nature of freedom and how crucial it is to human happiness and prosperity.”

In the spring of 2017, Mike became the president of the Advocates for Self-Government. Founded in 1985, it’s one of the first grassroots libertarian advocacy organizations in the United States. They are well-known for their World’s Smallest Political Quiz, which has been taken by tens of millions of people.

From an engaged student leader to the president of the Advocates for Self-Government, Mike’s story is a great example of how Students For Liberty can have a meaningful impact on an individual’s life. He recently completed the Atlas Network’s Think Tank MBA program which shows his determination is alive and well. In the future, we hope to hear more from Mike and other great student leaders like him!
