The International SFL Conference is the premiere event of the year for students dedicated to liberty and advancing freedom on campus. The world’s largest crowd of pro-liberty students will gather for a weekend of learning about liberty from contemporary leaders in liberty, discussing best practices for promoting liberty on campus, getting more involved in the larger movement for liberty, and enjoying a massive celebration of freedom! Additionally, we are excited to announce that this year’s conference will feature free internet for all attendees and even more improvements for attendees.
Students For Liberty was founded at the first conference in 2008 with 100 attendees. The ISFLC has grown every year in both size and quality of the experience. The 2012 Conference featured over 1,000 attendees at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC.
- 2008 – The inaugural Students For Liberty Conference in 2008 drew 100 students from 42 schools in 3 countries.
- 2009 – The 2009 International SFL Conference brought 153 students from 86 schools in 13 countries together.
- 2010 – The 2010 ISFLC drew 304 young liberty advocates through “Snowpocalypse” to Washington DC.
- 2011 – The 2011 conference broke all the previous records with over 500 attendees
- 2012 – Over 1,000 attendees including PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, IHS President Marty Zupan, 58 breakout sessions, partner organizations from across the movement, and a taping of the STOSSEL Show featuring David Boaz, Nick Gillespie, and former UN Ambassador John Bolton.
Friday Night Keynote and Alumnus of the Year: John Mackey
John P. Mackey, co-founder of the Company, has served as Chief Executive Officer since 1980. Mr. Mackey also served as President from June 2001 to October 2004, and as Chairman of the Board from 1978 to December 2009. As the company’s visionary, he has led the development of many innovative programs such as the $10 million in low-interest loans to local farmers and food producers to help them expand their businesses, the Whole Planet Foundationwhose mission is to help end poverty in developing nations with micro credit, a welfare rating system that improves the welfare of food animals, and a labeling system that creates transparency of seafood sustainability.
The Whole Foods Market workplace is based on the ideals of respect for the individual and self-empowerment. Mr. Mackey’s most recent focus is re-invigorating Whole Foods Market’s emphasis on healthy eating and lifestyle choices. An active promoter of a new business paradigm termed “Conscious Capitalism,” he is also co-founder of a non-profit organization of that name.
Friday Night Performance by Dorian Electra
Dorian Electra is a singer, songwriter, filmmaker, and visual artist, best known for her music videos about economics. Dorian has discovered that writing songs allows her to test her knowledge about the subjects she’s passionate about while communicating them to others in a fun and engaging way. She has written songs about math, quantum physics, and teeth-brushing — her most popular is a love song to dead, Austrian economist, Friedrich Hayek, which gained unexpected popularity on YouTube in 2010. Her rap music video “WE GOT IT 4 CHEAP” is about supply and demand, and “Roll With the Flow” explores the definition of “wealth,” and the problems of trying to centrally plan an economy.
Dorian is a recipient of the Moving Picture Institute’s (MPI) 2012 Fellowship Program, supporting her upcoming pop-music video, “FA$T CA$H,” about the dangers of central banks’ expansionary monetary policy. She is pursuing a Liberal Arts degree at Shimer College, a Great Books school in Chicago.
Saturday Afternoon AND Evening Taping of The STOSSEL Show
John Stossel is the most recognized libertarian spokesman alive today. His long run as a reporter for ABC’s 20/20 exposed millions of people to the follies of government intervention. His new show Stossel on Fox Business News provides a wonderful platform to discuss the ideas of liberty and get them out to a wide audience. We made history in 2011 by recording an episode of the STOSSEL Show at the ISFLC which was later broadcast worldwide on the Fox Business Network. That first show was such a hit that we repeated the feat in 2012 with an all-star libertarian panel included Cato VP David Boaz, Reason.TV Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie, and more.
These shows are so successful at showing the world the strength and size of the student movement for liberty that the STOSSEL Show will be joining us for a record 3rd YEAR IN A Row! This is our chance to once again show the world that libertarianism is not just about the ideas of intellectuals, but the fuel for an international movement of passionate students dedicated to liberty. As with previous years the STOSSEL taping is free & open to the public.
Update: This year Stossel will be filming TWO shows at the ISFLC. The first one will take place during the lunch break and will be a smaller more interactive show. There is limited seating so this show will be first come, first served. As in year’s past, the evening taping will be the big show where there will be enough seating for everyone in attendance at the conference as we showcase the full strength of the movement for liberty.
Sunday Keynote Magatte Wade
We are extremely excited to announce that this year’s Sunday Keynote for the 2013 International Students For Liberty Conference will be Magatte Wade. Ms. Wade was born in Senegal, educated in Germany and France, and launched her entrepreneurial career in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she co-founded Adina World Beverages after working closely with Silicon Valley start-ups. She is a TED Global Africa Fellow and last year started a new company, Tiossan, a contemporary lifestyle products brand that integrates the three cultures that formed her, Dakar, Paris, and San Francisco. She is fluent in, and conducts business in, Wolof, the predominant indigenous language of Senegal, French, and English.
She delivered this Ted Talk last year at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin. She was also named one of Forbes 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa and writes for The Huffington Post, Barron’s, and other publications.
The 2013 SFL Awards
One of the highlights of the International Students For Liberty Conference is the Annual Awards Presentation. The student movement for liberty is full of passionate, hard working individuals, and we seek to honor their efforts. Award recipients are chosen based on their hard work, organizational skills, value creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
This year, SFL will present awards for Student of the Year, Event of the Year, and Student Group of the Year along with the Alumnus of the Year. See the nominees for this year here.
The ISFLC will have 3 general sessions. The conference will begin Friday, February 15 at 5:00pm with a general session, musical performance, the SFL Awards, and John Mackey’s keynote. Saturday night will will feature the taping of the STOSSEL Show with the full audience. The conference will conclude on Sunday with the Sunday Keynote and closing ceremonies ending at 2:30. More information regarding the schedule will be released as we get closer to the event.
Saturday & Sunday Breakout Sessions and Partner Organizations
The real core substance of the conference will take place Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon with a full lineup of breakout sessions run by our sponsors and partner organizations. Last year many of our breakouts were standing room only, so this year we are expanding to offer even more space! We will have up to 10 sessions running at a time with topics varying from the philosophical foundations of liberty to campus activism training to single issue advocacy to advanced topics in liberty. In addition to the breakout sessions, the whole breadth of the liberty movement will be on display in the exhibit hall with representatives from our partner organizations in attendance to meet with and talk about how they can help your group promote liberty on campus.
