In this lecture, Benjamin Constant seeks to elaborate and bring forth the two conflicting ideals of liberty. He describes the contexts within which each had a great appeal to the people, and how out of these contexts they fail to be complementary to the society and lose appeal to the people.
He wanted to bring our attention to the fact that espousing the wrong ideal at the wrong time can have grave consequences for liberty in general. In this Samvad, we will be referring to the transcripts of his lecture as the point of discussion, to draw insights applicable to liberty in our times
