Earlier this month, Students For Liberty went up against Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in a debate hosted by the National Youth Rights Association. The topic of debate was which political philosophy better supports the rights of young people: classical liberalism or democratic socialism.
A little history first. SDS was founded in 1960 to organize the “new left”. The organization developed and expanded rapidly in the mid-1960s before dissolving at its last convention in 1969. SDS is regarded as the main organization behind the radicalism of the 1960’s. This new version of SDS was founded in 2006 and seeks to re-ignite that brand of student activism.
Check out the debate below. Many thanks to our representatives Will Freeland of Northwood University of Liya Palagashvili of George Mason University. Will and Liya did a great job and definitely impressed the audience. I’ll leave it to you to decide who “won” the debate.
Note: This video was not edited for content. Viewers should be warned that the SDS debate team used strong profanity.
