Starting today we will be profiling the nominees for the 2010 Students For Liberty Awards.  Our first profile is of Norman Horn of the University of Texas Longhorn Libertarians.  I had the pleasure of getting to know Norman while planning the 2009 Students For Liberty Texas Conference.  Along the way I discovered that he was active in all levels of the libertarian movement from local grassroots activism to blogging to academic writing.  Making his achievements all the more impressive is the fact that he will be receiving his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering later this year.

The following is a list of Norman’s many accomplishments.  I for one am thankful to have Norman on our side in the fight for liberty.

  • President of UT-Austin Libertarian Longhorns (2008-2009)
    • The goal of the LL is to train students to teach others about liberty, giving them the tools and experience necessary to articulate the libertarian message concisely, eloquently, and truthfully. But most importantly, I want our students to realize that it is through their own personal integrity that the libertarian vision is most fully realized.
    • Organized two libertarian candidate forums.
    • Assistant director of “Ron Paul on the Main Mall,” with over 4,000 people attending.
    • Regularly organized meetings, gave talks, and hosted speakers.

    • Hosted anti-prohibition activist Barry Cooper to promote awareness of police corruption and unjust imprisonment of individuals because of the War on Drugs (100+ attendees).
    • Increased activity with the Libertarian Party at both state and national level, including hosting four LP National Committee members in one semester: Jim Lark, Pat Dixon, Mary Ruwart, and R. Lee Wrights.
