Student Movement Update: Wheaton SFL Hosts Yuri Maltsev

The Wheaton Students For Liberty have had an incredibly successful semester.  In the past few months they have hosted numerous speakers, screened the movie 2081, and conducted a World’s Smallest Political Quiz on campus.  Their activities were recently covered in their school paper, The Wheaton Record:

“Last year, Hedberg started the club, originally called “Wheaton Students for Free Markets and Free Minds.”  However, according to him the club was largely “inactive.”  This year, the club’s name changed to “Wheaton Students for Liberty” due to the larger connection with “Students for Liberty” chapters on college campuses across the country.  So far, Wheaton Students for Liberty hosted “Libertarianism 101” in October where Dr. P.J. Hill, George F. Bennett Professor of Business and Economics and the advisor of the Libertarian Club, spoke on Libertarianism.  This past Tuesday, the Libertarian Club hosted a showing of the film 2081, and then dialogue after with Dr. Bryan McGraw, assistant professor of politics.”

Their founder, Tim Hedburg, also explained how libertarianism is compatible within a Christian framework:

“From a Christian standpoint, libertarianism upholds the doctrine of Imago Dei, according to Hedberg.  ‘All human persons possess intrinsic value and dignity and therefore have rights outside of what ‘group’ they belong to;’ therefore libertarianism ‘is about protecting these individual rights not only from each other but from government itself’ said Hedberg.”

Tomorrow the Wheaton Students For Liberty will continue their momentum by hosting Dr. Yuri Maltsev.  Dr. Maltsev is a professor of economics at Carthage College and a former advisor to President Gorbachev in the USSRFall_of_Evil_Empire before defecting to the United States in 1989.  He is also a member of Students For Liberty’s Speakers Network.  He will lecture on “The Fall of the Evil Empire and the Rise of 21st Century Socialism”,  comparing our current policy climate to that of the Soviet Union’s, particularly focusing on the recent healthcare bill and comparing it to the healthcare system in the former USSR.
