Today Students For Liberty Co-Founder and President, Alexander McCobin, spoke on a CPAC panel called “2 Minute Activist: Saving Freedom Across America”. In it he opened with this line:
In the name of freedom, I would like to thank the American Conservative Union for welcoming GOProud [a coalition of gay republicans] as a co-sponsor of this event, not for any political reason but for the message it sends….Students today recognize that freedom does not come in pieces. Freedom is a single thing that applies to the social as well as the economic realms and should be defended at all times.
Following Alexander was Ryan Sorba, author of The Born Gay Hoax. He had some unfriendly words in response:
“I’d like to condemn CPAC for bringing GOPride [sic] to this event. Civil rights are grounded in natural rights. Natural rights are grounded in human nature. Human nature is a rational substance in relationship to the intelligible end of the reproductive act of reproduction. Do you understand that?”
After that he was booed by the crowd of liberty lovers. He responded with more homophobic ranting and called out one of the supposed booers, Young Americans for Liberty’s Jeff Frazee, by saying “Guess what? You just
made an enemy out of me, buddy.” You can read more about the incident at Salon here: http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2010/02/19/cpac_gays/ or see both speeches juxtaposed here: http://thinkprogress.org/2010/02/19/cpac-conference-dissolves-into-right-wing-civil-war-over-gay-rights/.

The messenger may have been confused, but the message is still clear. Students For Liberty supports and defends liberty for ALL individuals!

Of course, the TP post made no mention of the loud clapping for Alex, or the lack of clapping for Sorba.
I did not attend the conservatives’ political action commissariat (CPAC) event. I chose not to attend because I am not a conservative. My political philosophy is a libertarian one, and therefore inconsistent with conservatives as they actually behave.
I am not now and never shall be a conservative in that I am not a racist, I am not a sexist, I am not a xenophobe, and I am not a homophobe. Most of all, I am not a war monger. Today’s conservative is, and has been for decades, all of these things. The neo-conservative movement is the culmination of all of these traditions.
Congratulations to those who, attending CPAC, got in touch with what it means to be a conservative today, and, in doing so, reject it. Freedom deserves better.
What better place to promote liberty? Many neocons went were positively influenced by Paul's speech today. One guy who booed him at the outset, who sat right in front of me, was giving him a standing ovation at the end, and some guy behind me in line to meet Dr. Paul afterwards bought End the Fed and said he wanted to know more about him (and therefore liberty) because his speech was good.
I suggest coming to CPAC 2011. This CPAC was awesome, we drowned out or matched the neocon voice on every point.
What Mr. Davidson said.
Peace,
Angela Keaton
Secretary of Outright Libertarians
P.S., Mr. McCobin and Mr. Frazee make me proud to be a libertarian today.
I am just angry the liberal blogs are deliberately twisting this story. Why do they have to exagerrate the truth when the real story is much better? The fact is, McCobin got WAY more APPLAUSE. He only got a few boos. He was only heckled be a couple of neocon's. The overall response for McCobin was POSITIVE, he had a lot of applause!
As for Sorba, he got booed off the stage, even by neocons. It wasn't a "split" or a "civil war" like liberal blogs are claiming. Sorbin got outright booed off stage form the get-go. Besides the Ron Paul speech it was the most amazing moment of CPAC as conservatives united to denounce this psycho. I really wish YAF would apologize for this Sorba guy's psychotic behavior. I know they're a bunch of neocons, but how can we respect YAF (we did at least respect them!) whatsoever when one of their most important members does this, and they don't condemn it? Hopefully they do very soon.
Good for SFL! Not only for speaking out for liberty and equal rights at a conservative meeting, but also for attending and making the same case for liberty and equal rights at liberal and leftist meetings. Good on ya!
