Arizona Takes a Stand in Defense of Liberty

Arizona is no longer in the news just for its immigration policies, now it is making headlines for its stance on civil liberties. On Thursday morning, Nick Coons, an Arizona entrepreneur and supporter of Students For Liberty at Arizona State University, filed a lawsuit against the individual mandate and health care overhaul.

Mr. Coons, with the help of the Goldwater Institute’s Clint Bolick, argue in the suit that the current healthcare reform act violates individual rights, the First Amendment, and details the lack of proper oversight by Congress for the proposed new healthcare system.

Mr. Bolick has a history of success when defending the rights of individuals. He has argued and won two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Coons v. Geithner is just one of many suits challenging the federal government’s power to regulate healthcare in America, and it comes in the wake of a Virginia lawsuit also challenging PPACA. The mounting sentiment against the overhaul can be seen as people learn more about how it will affect their wallets and their freedoms, and this is another interesting case to follow.

“We hope to bring the entire thing down,” Bolick said.
