Bio: Gabrielle Shiner is in her final year at Queen Mary, University of London, where she is pursuing a BA in English literature. Gabrielle was born and raised in the Washington, DC area but moved to Rome, Italy when she was sixteen years old. After her experience in Italy she decided to attend university in London so that she could experience more of Europe and life abroad.
Gabrielle’s interest in liberty began to develop in her Economics course during her junior year of high school. Her teacher, following her inclination towards classical liberal thinking, directed her towards the work of the Economics professors at George Mason University. She began following their blogs regularly and from there her interest in classical liberalism began to grow and develop. It was not, however, until she read Ayn Rand’s novel, The Fountainhead, that she began to understand liberty as more than a policy issue and became passionate about the philosophical, ethical and cultural roots of classical liberalism.
After getting in touch with the UK Liberty League, Gabrielle founded the QMUL Liberty League, a student organization devoted to liberty at Queen Mary University.
Favorite Figures in Liberty: F.A. Hayek, Ayn Rand, Frederic Bastiat
On European Students For Liberty: “ESFL is the most exciting progression in the libertarian movement since Students For Liberty was founded in 2008. For the first time, students across continents will have the opportunity to connect and bring together their ideas, passion, and motivation in order to promote liberty on a global scale. This proves that students dedicated to liberty across the globe are not only ambitious but committed to making their vision a reality. The most exciting thing about ESFL, however, is that this is only the beginning.”
