Student Movement Update: Dr. Lark at The University of Mississippi

Hosted by the Ole Miss Young Americans for Liberty

Dr. James W. Lark, III will be speaking at the University of Mississippi on Friday, October 16th.  Dr. Lark is the former Chairman of the Libertarian National Committee and a long time liberty activist.  He is also on Students For Liberty’s Board of Advisors and a great friend to the student movement.  If you are in the area, I highly suggest paying the Ole Miss YAL a visit while he is in town.  Learn more at  Ole Miss YAL’s great website www.umfreedom.com.Lark

Description:

“Warning: Governmentally mandated safety measures may be hazardous to your health.” Professor James Lark, former chair of the National Libertarian Party is speaking on the dangers of government involvement in our lives. Email OleMissYAL@gmail.com for more information!

Find out why government safety regulations are not what they appear to be. “For the urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.”

SFL E-Leadership Series: “An Economic History of the Prison”

Each month the Students For Liberty E-Leadership Series will bring you an online lecture on liberty.  October’s lecture will be on Monday, October 5th at 7:00pm featuring Professor Dan D’Amico and his lecture oD'Amicon “An Economic History of the Prison”

  • What: “An Economic History of the Prison”Who: Professor Dan D’Amico, Assistant Professor of Economics at Loyola University New Orleans
  • When: Monday, October 5th from 7:00-8:00pm EST
  • Where: Your Computer

Description: Prisons are undoubtedly a potential tool for the protection of liberty, but much like any technology they can be used in a variety of different methods to a variety of different consequences and motivated by a variety of different intentions.  It is Dr. D’Amico’s argument that the long and sometimes tragic history of prisons parallels the long and sometimes dismal history of liberty. If this is correct, the future potential and protection of individual liberty in society is in part dependent upon society’s ability to constrain the use of prison systems by governments.

MARV in Chicago

This weekend I had the awesome pleasure of hanging out with the Motorhome Diaries men as they traveled through Chicago. Of course, my city is known for its deep dish pizza and the just-as-deep corruption of its politicians, so it was great to see other liberty-lovers in the area. Students For Liberty is also proud to have a place on MARV’s right side (check out the photo!) to show our support for liberty in all corners of this country.

I also got to meet more students to get involved with our Midwest conference on October 17th, and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone come together at the University of Chicago. If you’re anywhere in the Midwest then, I hope you’ll join us. More information on all regional conferences can be found here with Chicago-specific info here. The MHD updates and blog can be found at http://motorhomediaries.com/.

Keep fighting the good fight!

SFL Regional Conferences Site Launched

At Students For Liberty we are excited to announce that we will be hosting seven Regional Conferences this year.  Building on the success of our famous International Conference and last year’s Regional Conferences, we are taking the liberty message on the road to campuses across the country.   These conferences, co-sponsored by the Don Smith Family Foundation, will allow us to reach new minds and swell the ranks of the student movement for liberty.

Each Regional Conference will feature expert speakers, three meals, and an evening social event.  Last year’s keynote speakers included Foundation for Economic Education President Lawrence W. Reed, Harvard University Professor Jeffrey Miron, and Cato Institute Senior Fellow Tom Palmer.  This is not an opportunity you or your friends should miss!

To promote and organize these conferences we have launched a new website:  www.politicalconferences.org. This site will act as your center of information for all news and updates related to the Regional Conferences.  The site also features this video, which will give you a better idea of what the conferences are about and can help you advertise to other students.

SFL Fall 2009 Conferences Promo from Students For Liberty on Vimeo.  Special thanks to GMU SFL member Mark Meranta for creating the video.

Here is a full list of the upcoming Regional Conferences:

Registration forms for the conferences will be available shortly.  Until then, we need your help to spread the word about these conferences.

  1. Forward this email to your friends and group members.
  2. Click here to RSVP for the events on Facebook.
  3. Post links to the website and video on your favorite liberty blogs, message boards, and Facebook pages.
  4. If you want to get involved in helping plan a conference, contact your Regional Director.  Their contact information is listed on the page of their respective conference.

Again, we cannot make the Regional Conferences a success without your help.  If you have any questions please visit the new website www.politicalconferences.org or email info@studentsforliberty.org.

Liberty Summer Seminar

Our Canadian friends at the Institute for Liberal Studies will be hosting their famous Liberty Summer Seminar on July 25th and 26th.  The Liberty Summer Seminar is commonly referred to as Libertystock, a gathering of liberty-minded friends from all over the world in bucolic Orono, Ontario.  I had the privilege of attending this event last year and highly recommend it.

The cornerstone of the Liberty Summer Seminar experience is the lectures delivered by leading experts from academia and public policy. Grounded in philosophy, economics, history and public policy these talks have one thing in common, they are grounded in the classical liberal values of freedom, justice, individuality and democracy. In between lectures participants will have ample opportunity to chat with fellow participants and engage in challenging conversations on the topics being discussed.

More information can be found on their website:  http://www.liberalstudies.ca/events/.
