World-renowned social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has been announced as the first confirmed speaker for the 2017 International Students For Liberty Conference (#ISFLC17).

Jonathan Haidt

Now in its tenth year, ISFLC17 represents the unity of the libertarian student movement and will bring together old friends and new faces for a weekend of learning and activism. The conference will take place from February 17-19, 2017 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington DC. Registration is open here!

Haidt is an engaging figure for young people interested in the ideas of liberty, thanks to his passion for free expression and open-mindedness. He played a key role in establishing and promoting Heterodox Academy: a politically diverse group of academics from various disciplines who are concerned with a lack of viewpoint diversity in American higher education.

He also co-authored a highly-praised 2015 article for The Atlantic, titled “The Coddling of the American Mind.” The article argues that protecting college students from words and ideas they don’t like (in the name of emotional wellbeing) is disastrous for both their education and mental health.

Students For Liberty looks forward to welcoming Haidt in February and to announcing many more high-profile speakers in the coming months. In the past, ISFLC has attracted big names in the liberty movement and beyond, including Ron Paul, Pussy Riot, and Governor Gary Johnson. This year will be no exception.

Attendees can also look forward to a fun, engaging conference experience beyond the amazing speakers. There’s plenty of time to socialize and network with fellow liberty-lovers as well as ample opportunity to check out our in-house libertarian art exhibition, the Ama-Gi Art Show. Then there’s the Awards Dinner, movie screenings, after-parties, the exhibitor hall…and much more!

As in past years, the registration price for the conference will increase as we closer to February. For now, it’s just $20 to register as a student, but prices will increase on November 1st. So make sure and register early to take advantage of lower prices!
