Description
Do you love liberty? Want to build great work experience? Want to make a difference in an organization dedicated to liberty that involves more than making coffee and opening envelopes? Then get ready for SFL’s Virtual Internship Program!
The SFL Virtual Internship Program is designed to give students a structured opportunity to promote liberty and learn how an organization dedicated to liberty is run without geographical restrictions. Tailored internship positions allow for specialized skill development based on your personal interests in promoting liberty. As a virtual internship, all work is done outside SFL’s office wherever interns are most comfortable doing work (e.g. from the comfort of your dorm room or campus library). There are no set times to do work unless a project deadline is looming. Interns have very flexible schedules.
With only 6 positions being offered in the Fall of 2009, this opportunity is reserved for the most dedicated students who are not just passionate about the ideas of liberty, but also about implementing change for liberty in the real world.
Why Intern?
Interning for liberty is one of the most rewarding experiences available to students. Interning for SFL in particular is an unparalleled opportunity. This is a chance to promote liberty with an organization that is changing the world. As an SFL Virtual Intern, you will:
- Gain a better understanding of what it takes to run an organization dedicated to liberty
- Develop a specialized skill set for future jobs and projects
- Gain networking opportunities to special events that SFL will reserve for interns
- Build your resumé quickly as you learn fundamental skills needed in the liberty movement
- Receive a letter of recommendation, if you preform quality work, for future internships and jobs
- Experience all this while working from the comfort of your home computer
Internship Positions Available
Campus Marketing – It is a special skill to be able to market on a campus. Promoting a student group and events on a particular school’s campus requires the marketer to utilize localized knowledge and traditional techniques such as fliering and tabling. The campus marketing intern will study best practices for promoting events on campuses, communicate with students to learn how they promote events on campus, and develop a guidebook for how to best promote a campus event.
Online Marketing – Marketing strategies are extremely different between physical, on the ground promotion and online outreach efforts. Marketing an organization or an idea online requires more personal interactions with people and tailored efforts to attract people’s interests. The online marketing intern will utilize online strategies such as social networking sites, forums, Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, and others to promote SFL.
Website Design & Maintenance – SFL primarily exists and lives on the internet. With 3 separate websites (www.StudentsForLiberty.org, www.PoliticalConferences.org, and www.FreeStudentMedia.org (coming soon)) constantly being fine-tuned and updated, this position will give free range to website designers to improve SFL’s websites. There will also be opportunities to create new websites from scratch. This position is intended for students with past experience in website design and maintenance, but who are looking to build their portfolio. Experience with Wordpress & Weebley is preferred.
Graphic Art – Every organization has an incredible need for good graphic artists who believe in liberty. Developing a skill set for creating good graphic art can guarantee one a job in the liberty movement. This position will require several new graphic art images to be produced each week ranging from logos for SFL groups to fliers for SFL programs to banners for websites. This is a great way to build your portfolio.
Development – For whatever reason, in the world of nonprofits, the word “development” is substituted for “fundraising”. This is the most important position in a nonprofit because it keeps the lights on. Without sufficient funding, projects cannot occur. Learning how to effectively fundraise for an organization is an invaluable skill for any position you seek in the future to make sure your projects are actualized. The development intern will work on identifying new donor prospects, drafting grant proposals, and strategizing new methods to raise funds.
Communications – Want to learn how nonprofits communicate with people outside their organization? As a communications intern, you will draft press releases, contact local media, and generally communicate the work that SFL and SFL’s student organizations are doing to promote the public’s knowledge of the student movement for liberty.
Intern Expectations
- Complete assigned projects in a timely manner based on their internship position.
- Participate in at least 1 SFL E-Leadership Webinar each month to learn about the ideas of liberty and how to promote liberty on campus.
- Answer emails and phone calls in a timely manner (you check your email 10 times a day so you can respond to emails within 2 days).
- Note: There are no structured time requirements for the Virtual Internship. Interns set their own schedules and are expected to complete a certain number of projects rather than put in a certain amount of time, but are expected to work enough to complete their projects in a timely manner. To determine if you will be able to dedicate enough time to the internship, though, please be able to dedicate a minimum of 7 hours per week to the internship.
